If you follow me on social media, you know I post a lot of pictures to share my journey and many are cliche “look at my gains” with some daily tips for you. In return, I get asked so many different questions about training from supplementing and nutrition to which workouts I do. I love being able to guide and help people with what I am learning from Keith.
The question I get most often…
“What are your favorite ab workouts?”
Honest to God, my answer is umpteen reps of:
- Meal prepping
- Avoiding crappy food
The truth is, I barely do abs and here’s why I think you should focus on the above exercises before you even dedicated a solid amount of time to isolated ab moves.
If you do a million crunches, no one is going to see your abs until the layer of fat is off of them. There’s really no other way to put it.
That being said, you should still engage your core because core strength is very important. So keep it tight when lifting and add moves into your workouts that require balance (squats, push-ups, etc) so that your work your entire core and improve strength with functional movements. But you really don’t need to spend much time on your abs beyond that.
What you should be doing is cleaning up your diet and making sure your macros match your goals.
The right macros (AKA portions of protein/carbs/fat) will tell your body to become a fat furnace. Not only will you feel great, but you will see your body fat percentage drop dramatically. Keith plans all of my nutrition for me and it changes OFTEN. Beyond that, I do 3 sets of hanging abs 2-3 times throughout the week. That’s only about 10 minutes total per week, you guys!
*I highly suggest you consider working with an expert to plan your nutrition and get support with cleaning things up so you can reach your goals. Keith and I do offer online coaching which you can take a look at here.*
So my tip for you today is to stay tuned because I know meal prepping is something that not everyone masters overnight. It has taken me months to get it down to where I can practically do it with my eyes closed. Beyond the prep, I still practice (and sometimes struggle) with avoiding the junk food. It’s a two part deal!
As a way to help you, I will be starting a Meal Prep Master series! If you have specific questions about prepping/planning please leave them below or reach out on social media. (You can also download a free toolkit for meal planning here.)
